YUNUSA ZAKARI YA'U

He was also a guest researcher in 2002, 2003 and 2006 at the Department of Political Science, Stockholm University, Sweden.

He started lecturing from 1984 at BUK until 1999 when he resigned to join AITEC (UK) as an ICT consultant. Since then he has been working as Executive Director with the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Kano. He served as a member of the NuNet Committee at BUK, Kano State ICT Policy Drafting Committee, Committee for the Establishment of the Ado Bayero Computer College, Consultant for the establishment of the Kano State ICT Park and to several other organizations such as the DFID, MacArthur Foundation, the Centre for Research and Documentation, among others. He was Director of the CODESRIA Child Institute for 2007 on ICTs and Youth Culture (2007) and is currently the Secretary General of the Information Technology (Industry) Association of Nigeria (ITAN).

He has also served on several IT policy and programmes committees both at state and national level.


He has published extensively in the areas of ICTs, entrepreneurship, mass media and youth studies. A writer and activist, Ya'u, who maintains a weekly column in the Independent (www.independentngonline.com), is on the board of several organizations including the Civil Society Centre for Legislative Advocacy (CISCAL), SchoolNet Nigeria, Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), Community Action for Popular Participation (CAPP), Abuja, (1997-2003) and Civil Liberties Organization (1995-2007). He has consulted for several organizations on ICTs including the Kano State government on the establishment of the Kano State ICT Park.


He has authored/edited eight books and over 30 contributed chapters to several others and journal articles Among his books are Years of Darkness: Academic Freedom in Nigeria, 1993-1998, (co-authored with F. Okoye, 1998), Great Nigerian Students: Movement Politics and Radical Politics, (co-edited with Prof. B. Beckman), CRD/PODSU, Stockholm, 2005 and Civic Education: Strategies for Mobilizing Local Resources for NGOs and CBOs (2004).

Yunusa Zakari Ya'u, was born in 1960 in Katagum Local Government of Bauchi State. He attended Government Secondary School, Azare before enrolling at Bayero University Kano (BUK) where he studied Electrical Engineering. He later went to ABU, Zaria to read Telecommunications.
